With the advancement of technology, the publishing industry is undergoing many exciting changes with the overlap of traditional printing and applications to the Web. Up-to-date training in the latest publishing software can take you to the next level.
Our Publishing Extension Certificate prepares you to integrate the most popular industry software to achieve the best effects and output in computerized graphic design.
Requirements
Strong computer and a solid understanding of Windows file management. You must be comfortable working in a Windows environment. Previous work with or a strong interest in publishing is highly recommended. Although you do not need the software programs, you must have access to an up-to-date computer for occasional out-of-class work including access to the Internet, use of CD-ROMs, practice files, assignments, etc.

Take the Publishing AND Web Design Certificates at the same time and save!* Please call the Program Coordinator at 403.440.6658 to discuss how you can apply any courses you may already have taken at Mount Royal. Illustrator for Print & Web and Acrobat for Print & Web are common to both programs and the weekday classes are scheduled so that you may take both programs at once.
Earning Your Extension Certificate
Complete the eight required courses (210 hours) listed in the schedule above with a minimum of 75% attendance, successful completion of all classroom assignments and exercises, and a minimum grade of 65% on a final project.
Career Outlook
Successful completion of the Publishing Extension Certificate may lead to an entry-level position with graphic design responsibilities.

Layout and Design
Explore principles of professional layout and publishing design, using the printed word and visual impact to get your message across. Discuss industry terminology, page layout fundamentals, typography and design concepts, and avoid common errors. Practise designing and editing sample documents on paper. Learn about software categories and printing process considerations.

Photoshop, Level 1 - Publishing
Get the most from your digital photos or scanned images using Adobe Photoshop. Calibrate your computer monitor and printer so what you see on the screen matches what’s delivered by the printer. Resize digital images for high-quality print output and for the Internet. Adjust tonal range, colour, hue and saturation. Prepare files correctly for commercial print jobs.

Illustrator for Print and Web
Produce electronic graphic images, manipulate text and more. Enhance projects, comprehend terminology and prepare for production as you discover the functions of Illustrator. Know how and when to use the tools, layering, filtering and colour for expert effects. Address typographical issues with various fonts.

Photoshop, Level 2
Explore the full capabilities of digital imaging technology. Prepare image files for proper print output using service bureaus or home printers. Develop the skills for creating commercial quality image “comps”. Gain a broad awareness of the software’s many features and full potential.
Note: We strongly recommend completion of Photoshop, Level 1 or equivalent before registering in this course.

Adobe InDesign
Use Adobe InDesign for combining text, graphics and digital photos to create professional quality brochures, magazines and reports. Offering high-end integration with other Adobe products such as Illustrator and Photoshop, you can use InDesign’s many features for producing press-quality output and web-ready documents.

Adobe Acrobat for Print and Web
Learn to create, modify and apply interactivity to electronic portable document formats (PDF) using Adobe Acrobat Pro. Gain familiarity with the Acrobat workspace and how it integrates in the Creative Suite workflow including the Distiller JobOption compression engine, forms, security and web capture. Modify PDFs with Illustrator and Photoshop editors, examine pre-press and print production standards, and embed multimedia in completed PDF files.
Note: We encourage you to bring sample files to convert and modify and apply PDF formatted features.

Integrating Publishing Software
Produce effective materials as you integrate concepts you examined in previous layout, electronic drawing and digital photography courses while you work on an in-class project.

Advanced Publishing: Final Project
This final, graded course is a culmination of the previous course work in the Publishing Certificate. By exploring advanced concepts in publishing, prepare finished artwork that is expertly designed and camera-ready. Discuss persuasive page layout, typeface selection, accessing your creativity, effective use of colour and guidelines for camera-ready artwork.
