How can I appeal my grades?

Can I audit a Continuing Education course?
If you want to attend a continuing education course but not receive official grades, you must seek written permission no later than one week prior to the course start date to audit from the appropriate Program Coordinator at Mount Royal University Continuing Education. You may only audit courses that are considered part of an Extension Certificate program or an externally graded professional designation. Permission to audit must be approved one week prior to course commencement. Such permission is at the discretion of the Program Coordinator and pending space availability. If you are auditing a course you may not submit assignments or complete examinations for grading. Once granted permission to audit, you may not change to graded status. You may, in succeeding semesters, register in any graded course which you have previously audited. Full course fees, payment deadlines and course withdrawal policies apply to audited courses.

The BookStore also carries resource books, study aids and a wide range of general reading material. Special orders are welcome. Educationally priced computer software, computer wireless products, stationery supplies, crested clothing and gift items are also available.

Can I sell my books back to the BookStore?
The BookStore provides a used textbook buyback service for texts required for the next semester, paying up to 50% of the current retail price.

Can I get a Campus Card?
The Campus Card is Mount Royal University’s official ID card. All Continuing Education students have “Student” status in the Campus Card system and can be issued a “Student” Campus Card upon request. You will be able to obtain a card 24 hours after you have registered for at least one course and there are no holds on your registration.

What happens if my course is cancelled?
All classes are subject to cancellation if there are insufficient registrations. If your course is cancelled, you may either transfer to another available course or receive a full refund. Credit card refunds are credited to your credit card account; cheque, cash and debit payments receive a refund with a mailed cheque. We will make every effort to inform you of the cancellation prior to the start of the course; therefore, please provide both a business and home phone number as well as an e-mail address when registering.

How do I request a certificate, parchment or replacement parchment?
Extension Certificate (part-time), Certificate (full-time), Diploma (full-time): Upon completing one of these programs, you should complete and submit an Application to Graduate form. The form notifies your Program Coordinator at Mount Royal University Faculty of Continuing Education and Extension of your program completion.

Certificate of Completion: Upon completing a Certificate of Completion program, you should complete and submit a Request for Certificate form. The form notifies your Program Coordinator at Mount Royal University Faculty of Continuing Education and Extension of your program completion.

Replacement Parchment: If you have lost your official parchment, please complete and submit a Request for Replacement Parchment form.

How can I find the location of my classroom?
Your classroom location and other important information you need for your first class is located on your registration confirmation or Student Schedule/Bill. If you register by phone, fax, mail or in person, it will be mailed to you if there is sufficient time before your first class. If you register online, you should print your Student Schedule/Bill once your payment has been processed.

At any time once you have registered you can access this information via MyMRU.ca. Once you’re logged on, click on the Student Resources tab, go to the Student Online Resources box at the top left and click on Registration. Then click on Student Schedule/Bill and follow the prompts.

If you are on campus for your first class and have forgotten to bring your registration confirmation with you, the Security desk at the West Gate entrance or at the Holy Cross Campus can direct you. If you are in the Roderick Mah Centre for Continuous Learning the receptionist can direct you during work hours.

Do I get a discount on computer software?
Students registered in the current semester are eligible to purchase a low-cost licence and media for the applications covered by their program. BookStore.

Is there a deadline to register?
Unless it is indicated directly in the course information, there is no deadline to register for Faculty of Continuing Education and Extension courses. However, you should register as soon as possible, because if you wait until the last minute, the course limit may have been reached or the course may have been cancelled one week before the first class due to low enrolment.

How is a continuing education course different from a credit course?
Most Mount Royal University Faculty of Continuing Education and Extension courses are personal and professional development courses that are not usable for university transfer studies, diplomas or degrees. They generally cannot be transferred to another post-secondary institution.

Certain Extension Certificates have been developed in cooperation with the Mount Royal University credit faculties. These certificates have components which are transferable into various diplomas, applied degrees and degrees, provided applicants achieve the minimum required grade in the course(s) and meet the entrance requirements for the degree. How is an Extension Certificate different from a Certificate of Completion?
An Extension Certificate program is a series of courses totalling over 60 hours, often created in consultation with industry and business experts. A Certificate of Completion is a series of courses grouped by subject matter.

When do I pay my fees?
Fees must be paid in full when you register through Continuing Education Registration (by phone, mail, fax, web or in person). Specific fees are listed with each course description in this guide. Fees do not include course materials, unless otherwise indicated. GST will be added to course fees where applicable. No post-dated cheques are accepted. A fee of $25 is charged on all NSF cheques.

What should I bring to my first class?
Please bring your registration confirmation or Student Schedule/Bill with you to the first class, as well as any textbooks, course materials or other items specified in the Student Schedule/Bill (registration confirmation).

What food services are available at Lincoln Park Campus?
Sodexo operates food service facilities at the Herb 'n' Market Food Court (2nd floor), Starbucks (main floor), Faculty of Arts Building (main floor), Bissett School of Business Building (main floor) and Roderick Mah Centre for Continuous Learning. The food court in Wyckham House (West Gate) has Biblos Mediterranean Food, Booster Juice, Cultures, Dairy Queen, Edo Japan, Good Earth, Mucho Burrito, Mrs. Vanellis, Subway, Thai Express, Wycked Deli and Zen Vietnamese Grill. There is also the Collegiate Shop convenience store. On Main Street (main hallway) you can find the C-Store, Mr. Sub and Tim Horton’s. Hours are posted on site or go to the Food Services website.

Catering services, from donuts to dinners, are provided for large and small groups.

How can I access my grades and unofficial transcript?
Unofficial Transcripts: You may print your unofficial transcripts or view your grades through MyMRU and follow the appropriate steps to ensure your account is active. Once you are logged in, click on the Student Resources tab, then select Student Records from the Online Service menu, and then select Unofficial Academic Transcript. Should you have difficulty accessing MyMRU, please first check your information carefully, and then call the HelpDesk at 403.440.6000.

I am an international student – can I apply for a Study Permit to take a Continuing Education course?
Faculty of Continuing Education and Extension programs are not eligible for study permits for international students. The exceptions are the full-time programs – Massage Therapy, Funeral Director & Embalmer and Personal Fitness Trainer. Information for international students.

I’ve already taken courses in my subject area. What courses or programs are eligible for Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition?
Most areas of study are eligible for Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR); however, certain programs may have industry or curriculum requirements which exempt them from eligibility.

What is a prerequisite?
A prerequisite is a requirement for prior learning that you must meet before registering in a given course. For example, a Level 1 course might be a prerequisite for a Level 2 course, meaning you must have completed Level 1 successfully before you can take Level 2. Course prerequisites are listed with the course description.

If you attempt to register online in a course for which you have not met the prerequisites, you will receive a “Preq & Test Score Error” message. If you are registering by phone or in person, you will be informed by Continuing Education registration staff that there is no record of your completing the prerequisite. If you have questions, please contact the Program Coordinator of your program. On a case by case basis, courses taken at another institution or other prior learning will be considered in lieu of the stated prerequisite.

Is the Mount Royal Recreation Centre available to me?
As a Continuing Education student you can purchase a membership to Mount Royal Recreation at a reduced rate during the semester you are a registered student. Family members also receive reduced membership rates to join. Membership includes access to most areas of the Recreation Centre and member rates for all programs. I am a beneficiary of an RESP (Registered Education Savings Plan) - do Continuing Education programs qualify?
A qualifying educational program is a course of study that lasts at least three weeks in a row, with at least 10 hours of instruction or work each week. Qualifying educational programs include apprenticeships and programs offered by a trade school, CEGEP, college or university. For more information, please contact your RESP provider or visit Human Resources and Social Development Canada.

What is a semester?
A semester (also called a term) is a period of time during which specific courses are offered. In Mount Royal University Faculty of Continuing Education and Extension, there are four semesters: Fall (September through December), Winter (January through April), Spring (May and June) and Summer (July and August). If you are taking a course during the Fall semester, this means your course can start on any date between September and December; it does not necessarily mean that your course starts in September.

If a course is part of a certificate or designation, can I take it as a stand-alone?
You may take individual courses that are part of a certificate or professional designation program without having to earn the certificate. However, you must meet the requirements and prerequisites for the course(s) selected. Please refer to the information listed with the specific course you are interested in.

What happens if my course falls on a statutory holiday?
Mount Royal University is closed on statutory holidays and no Continuing Education classes are held. We are also closed during the long weekend. Please consult your registration confirmation / Student Schedule/Bill for further information on course dates or call 403.440.6875 for information. The BookStore is also closed on statutory holidays.

What is the Code of Student Conduct?
The Code of Student Conduct is a comprehensive account of Mount Royal University’s expectations of its students with respect to academic dishonesty and non-academic misconduct. It also guarantees Mount Royal University’s obligations to its students and provides a detailed account of the rights of students under the Code. Finally, it describes the procedures for conducting hearings and appeals and the sanctions related to Infractions of the Code.

How can I get an income tax receipt?
Courses taken at a post-secondary institution may be eligible for income tax credit. T2202As for eligible tuition and education amounts are now available through MyMRU. Should you have difficulty accessing MyMRU, please first check your information carefully, and then call our HelpDesk at 403.440.6000.

If you can't find a tax receipt on MyMRU and believe you should receive one, please contact CE Registration at 403.440.3833 or toll-free 1.877.287.8001.

If you have a question about the hours / data associated on the T2202A form, please call the Fees Department for clarification, 403.440.3303.

Please refer to Canada Revenue Agency to determine eligibility when preparing your annual income tax returns.

Can I transfer to another course?
You may transfer from one course to another available course. To request a course/seminar or section transfer, notify Continuing Education Registration Services at 403.440.3833 four (4) full working days (excluding Saturdays, Sundays and statutory holidays) prior to the start of the course/seminar in which you originally registered. If you do not make your transfer before this deadline, you are liable for the entire tuition fee, or may opt to remain in the original course/seminar. If you do not choose a specific course to transfer into, a credit balance will be added to your account to be applied against the tuition fee when you register in another Mount Royal University Continuing Education course within the same fiscal year. If you do not register in another course before the fiscal year ends, the credit balance less a 10% administration fee will be refunded to you.

If the course of your choice is full, you may ask to be placed on the course waiting list. If space becomes available, we will make every effort to contact you.

Some courses are designed specifically for children and youth. You do not need a high school diploma to take many continuing education courses at Mount Royal University. Can I withdraw from a course?
Withdrawal Policy: To be eligible for a refund, written withdrawal from a course/seminar must be received no later than four working days before the start date (excluding Saturdays, Sundays and statutory holidays). Written withdrawal received less than four days is not eligible for a refund.
