Choosing Your Program

1. Auditing courses
If you want to attend a continuing education course but not receive official grades, you must seek written permission no later than one week prior to the course start date to audit from the appropriate Program Coordinator at Mount Royal University Continuing Education. Such permission is at the discretion of the Program Coordinator and pending space availability. You may only audit courses that are considered part of an Extension Certificate or an externally graded professional designation.  If you are auditing a course you may not submit assignments or complete examinations for grading. Once granted permission to audit, you may not change to graded status. You may, in succeeding semesters, register in any graded course which you have previously audited. Full course fees, payment deadlines and course withdrawal policies apply to audited courses.

2. Difference between continuing education and credit courses
Most Mount Royal University Faculty of Continuing Education and Extension courses are personal and professional development courses that are not usable for university credits. They generally cannot be transferred to another post-secondary institution.

3. Fee payment
Fees must be paid in full when you register through Continuing Education Registration (by phone, mail, fax, web or in person). Course fees are listed on the program web pages. Fees do not include course materials, unless otherwise indicated. GST will be added to course fees where applicable. No post-dated cheques are accepted. A fee of $25 is charged on all NSF cheques.

4. Individual vs. certificate courses
You may take individual courses that are part of a certificate or professional designation program without having to earn the certificate. However, you must meet any requirements and prerequisites.

The Faculty of Continuing Education and Extension also offers many courses that are not part of a certificate or other designation.

5. International students
Faculty of Continuing Education and Extension programs are not eligible for study permits for international students. The exceptions are the full-time programs – Massage Therapy, Funeral Director & Embalmer and Personal Fitness Trainer. Information for international students.

6. Prerequisites
A prerequisite is a requirement for prior learning that you must meet before registering in a given course. Course prerequisites are listed with the course description.

If you attempt to register online in a course for which you have not met the prerequisites, you will receive a Preq & Test Score Error message. If you are registering by phone or in person, you will be informed by Continuing Education registration staff that there is no record of your completing the prerequisite. If you have further questions, please contact the Program Coordinator of your program.

7. Prior Learning and Assessment Recognition
Many areas of study are eligible for Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR). Some programs may have industry or curriculum requirements which exempt them from eligibility. Please contact the Program Coordinator of the program you're interested in for details.

8. RESPs
A qualifying educational program is a course of study that lasts at least three weeks in a row, with at least 10 hours of instruction or work each week. Qualifying educational programs include apprenticeships and programs offered by a trade school, CEGEP, college or university. For more information, please contact your RESP provider or Human Resources and Social Development Canada.

9. Scholarships and awards
Mount Royal University Faculty of Continuing Education and Extension has business, industry and community partners who offer a number of annual scholarships and awards to continuing education students. CE Scholarships and Awards.
