Frequently Asked Questions

  1. When are classes offered?

Click here for more information on course dates and class schedules.

Remember to register early! If you wait until the last minute, the course limit may have been reached or the course may have been canceled due to low enrolment.

Ask to be placed on a wait list if your chosen course is already full.

  1. Which level should I register in?

Detailed descriptions of our language levels can help you identify the appropriate level for you to begin your studies. If you're still unsure where you best fit amongst the levels, please call 403.440.5102 for further placement recommendations.

  1. What if I register in the wrong level for my ability?

Wherever possible, we are happy to transfer your registration to the appropriate level.

  • Moving up or down a level?
Contact the Program Coordinator at 403.440.5102 after your first class.  Moving up?  If you wait much longer, you may miss too much new material at the higher level.
  • Every effort will be made to have your registration transferred to the appropriate level if there is space available and/or the transfer occurs before the third class.

Please note: There may be additional fees applicable to higher course levels, and/or you may have to accept a new course delivery schedule. If we are not able to accommodate your move to another level because that particular level is not offered that term, you may request a transfer into the appropriate course for the next term or a refund of your course fees.

  1. What type of skills will I learn in class?

Developing practical and real life conversational skills (speaking and listening) is the focus of each language course. Interactive activities will allow you to practice the vocabulary and grammar rules learned in class.

  1. Are there tests?

As these are credit-free courses, there are no final examinations for grades. Your instructor will provide you with opportunities to self-monitor your progress.

  1. How much homework is required?

Homework (e.g., written exercises, pre-reading, oral practice) is provided for those interested in excelling in their mastery of the language. It is highly recommended that material be reviewed on a weekly basis for optimum results.

  1. Can I receive credit for this course at Mount Royal University or another institution?

No. As these are credit-free courses with no final academic grades, they cannot be transferred for credit within Mount Royal or other service providers.

  1. Are textbooks required for language courses?

Yes.  Almost all language courses have an assigned text or course pack that can be purchased at the Mount Royal BookStore. Call 403.440.6300 to inquire about which textbook is required for your course and level.  Most textbooks will cover more than one level of language training (some exceptions apply).  Course packs are often available just prior to the course start date.

  1. How much do courses cost?

Please visit the Continuing Education website for course fees and course dates/schedules.

  1. What is an average class size?

Average class size is 8-15 students, with a limit of 18 for most courses.  For smaller language classes, see Private Language Instruction and Customized Language Training.
