Q: How many levels are in the CAPPA program?
A:
There are 5 levels:
CAPPA Level 1 - Introduction to the Oil Patch
CAPPA Level 2 - Oil Production Accounting
CAPPA Level 3 - Gas Production Accounting
CAPPA Level 4 - Advanced Production Accounting
CAPPA Level 5 - Case Study

Note: For those learners who begin the program prior to Fall 2006, Level 5 is optional. Keep visiting our website for updates.

For a complete description for each course, click here.

As of Fall 2006 the CAPPA Level 5 course is part of the CAPPA Certificate program at Mount Royal University Faculty of Continuing Education and Extension. The course will provide you with a complete review of the CAPPA program, culminating in an overview of a one-month production accounting cycle from data collection to revenue. This course is the next step in CAPPA’s continuing commitment to a quality education program.

Q: What is the Challenge Exam for Level 1?
A:
Some students entering the CAPPA Program may have work or education experience that reflects the subject matter of the first course — CAPPA Level 1: Introduction to the Oil Patch. The Challenge Exam is a means of recognizing this experience. If you have oil and gas industry experience, you may register to take the Level 1 Challenge Exam instead of the Level 1 classroom course.

If you receive a minimum mark of 70% in the Challenge Exam for Level 1, you may register in Level 2. You must write the Challenge Exam within 4 weeks of your date of registration. All challenge exams are written in a proctored exam setting.

Optional study materials are available at an additional fee.

Click here for current list of proctored exam dates in Calgary.

If you are outside of Calgary and area, please see the following information on how to arrange your own proctored exam.

A:
A student has 4 months (revised) from the date of registration to complete the course. The CAPPA Certificate program must be completed within 5 years.

Q: How do I complete my course requirements?

Q: What is the Petroleum Registry of Alberta?
A:
The Petroleum Registry of Alberta is a shared, interactive database, accessed through the Internet. The Registry incorporates re-engineered business processes targeted to improve the quality and management of key volume, royalty and infrastructure information associated with Alberta’s upstream petroleum industry.

The Registry serves three distinct functions:

  1. It is a central database for all of the volumetric and infrastructure data related to Alberta’s upstream oil and gas industry.
  2. It is a communication tool enabling stakeholders to exchange accurate information quickly and efficiently (partner reporting and pipeline splits are being developed).
  3. It is an analysis tool. As an analysis tool, the Registry avoids common mathematical errors by saving the information in its most basic form and then performing calculations as required.

For each level, you must go online and answer a set of questions related to that level. This is to ensure that you have a solid grasp of the skills and tools presented in each level. It also provides spreadsheets and other materials used in the industry.

The Registry Training Performance Support System (PSS) is available to students currently enrolled in the CAPPA program. This Registry Training System is an online learning tool, comprised of Registry Training Modules (represented as file folders), which CAPPA has cross-referenced to the relevant CAPPA course modules. CAPPA requires that all students complete the required registry folders before they graduate.

All students must complete Petroleum Registry modules 0.1 through to 6.6 (with the exception of 6.3) by the time they write their CAPPA level 4 final exam. CAPPA recommends that students keep up with the Registry modules, pertaining to each CAPPA level as they go through the CAPPA course. Please refer to the cross-reference chart in your course materials to determine which Registry modules relate to a particular CAPPA module.

CAPPA has estimated that it will take approximately 105 hours to complete all required folders for CAPPA levels 1-5.

It is helpful to complete your CAPPA online registry questions as you complete your course work in each level. Completing the questions can be an additional preparation for writing your exams.

Registration information can be found in module 1 of each level for the CAPPA online registry, as well as a form for you to fill out and fax to CAPPA. Or click here to download the form. All login information and directions on how to access the registry are located in section one.

Once the form is received by CAPPA, your account is activated. This may take up to 14 business days. The username and password created for Level 1 will be re-activated as you register in each of the subsequent levels.

If you have difficulty accessing this website, please use the contact phone number and e-mail issued by CAPPA, found in module 1 of each course. Mount Royal College cannot help you access this site.

Please note that your answers to the online registry do not contribute to your overall mark but you must complete the questions for each level before CAPPA will award your certificate at the end of the program.

All questions from the online registry must be completed before your CAPPA certificate will be issued.

Q: How do I take my exams?
A:
All exams are scheduled in a proctored exam setting and must be scheduled through our office by contacting the Program Assistant by e-mail at agill@mtroyal.ca.

In your course materials, you will find a list of exam dates and times. You must choose a date for each exam and book that date with the Program Assistant by e-mail (above). You will receive a confirmation of your exam date by email. If you have not received a confirmation two business days before the exam date, please contact the Program Assistant.

Click here for current list of proctored exam dates in Calgary.

Q: What if I do not live in or near Calgary - how would I take my exams?
A:
If you are outside of Calgary and area, you are responsible for making your own arrangements for proctored mid-term and final exams for each level. The exams must be taken at a recognized post-secondary institution with an approved proctor in attendance. Any fees for the arrangements of the proctored exams are the student’s responsibility.

Once you have made your arrangements, in order to have your exam materials sent to the proctor, please send an e-mail to agill@mtroyal.ca including:
- name of proctor
- contact information for proctor
- name and address of post-secondary institution
- time and date of exam

Your completed exam is collected by the proctor and returned to Mount Royal University Faculty of Continuing Education and Extension for marking.

Q: What do the mid-term and final exams consist of?
A:
Each level has a mid-term and a final exam. Everything contained in the course manual for that level is subject to be tested on. The questions are all multiple choice and true/false. The self-study test booklet included in the course materials includes a sampling of questions similar to those that will be on the exams.

Q: How do I find out my marks?
A:
Your exam marks are mailed to you five (5) business days after the date of the exam. Please note that we are unable to release exam marks or information over the telephone or e-mail.
