Note: These courses must be completed before registering in any further certificate courses

These 4 Introductory Courses give you a solid foundation for any type of land administration. Once you have completed these courses (details below), you can choose to specialize in surface rights, or mineral rights.

Students who complete all Mineral Rights courses may also choose to pursue the Land Contracts Extension Certificate.

Program Outcomes - Introductory Courses
Upon completion of the Introductory Courses, you will be able to:

  • demonstrate knowledge of oil and gas law by analyzing legal concepts and principles in torts, contracts and doctrines of estate
  • explain how land administrators deal with federal and provincial environmental compliance issues
  • register in the Surface Rights or Mineral Rights programs

Required Introductory Courses

The Petroleum Industry: An Integrated Approach
From exploration to production, this course introduces the petroleum industry, its terminology and applications.
Note: CAPPA Level 1 may be taken instead.

Challenge Exam: The Petroleum Industry: An Integrated Approach
Available to those with industry experience that includes specific course content. Pass mark is 60%. This challenge exam may only be taken once. Materials are optional. Exam must be scheduled and written within 4 weeks of registration date

Subject code: XPLA 200013 Hours. Fee: $275
CRN 501611 examMay 1-June 30 registration. Students have 4 weeks from registration date to write the exam.

Land Concepts
Review legal aspects of land ownership in Alberta. Learn the fundamental principles of land titles and property law while gaining a deeper understanding of industry practices.
