Mortgage Associates Program

Mortgage associates are highly motivated specialists. They play an instrumental role in helping consumers find and achieve their financing and home ownership goals and providing valuable options so consumers can make informed choices about their mortgages.

The Mortgage Associates Program provides the knowledge base and skill set required to become a licensed mortgage associate in Alberta and is required for licensing in Alberta. The program consists of two mandatory courses:

•  The Fundamentals of Mortgage Brokerage, administered by the Real Estate Council of Alberta (RECA)
  
•  The Practice of Mortgage Brokerage, delivered at Mount Royal University

Learners must successfully complete The Fundamentals of Mortgage Brokerage course and the Provincial Qualifying Exam through RECA before registering in The Practice of Mortgage Brokerage course. For prerequisite information and course details, please contact RECA directly at 1.888.425.2754.

The Practice of Mortgage Brokerage

Upon completion of the Fundamentals course, learners are required to complete the Practice of Mortgage Brokerage course. This course provides the technical competency that mortgage associates need to arrange mortgage financing for consumers and covers topics such as:

• Introduction to Real Estate
• The Mortgage Document
• Credit Bureaus
• Title Insurance
• Mortgage Qualifying
• Detecting Fraud & Forgery
• The Valuation Process
• Mortgage Mathematics
• Using Mortgage Application Software
• Marketing, Advertising & Sales

In addition to meeting the prerequisite requirements, 90% mandatory classroom attendance in The Practice of Mortgage Brokerage course is required to qualify to write the Provincial Qualifying Examination (PQE). The PQE is an online exam and consists of 77 multiple choice questions which you will have 2 hours to complete. You must achieve a minimum of 70% in order to pass.

The cost of the PQE is $125+GST and is to be paid at the time of writing by Visa, MasterCard, American Express or PayPal only. Exams are marked instantaneously and the results will also be automatically e-mailed to you.

If you are unsuccessful the first time, you have only one more opportunity to write the exam. The cost of a re-write is $125+GST and payable at the time of writing by the methods specified above.
