Alberta Views 2012 Short Story Competition
Alberta Views magazine is currently seeking entries for its annual short story competition. Stories should be no more than 3,000 words. The grand prize is $1,000, plus publication in the December 2012 issue of Alberta Views, The deadline for submissions is June 30, 2012. More information about the contest, including detailed instructions on submitting stories, can be found here,
 
Convocation Information
The formal convocation for students graduating with a B.A., English will be held on the morning of Friday, June 1, 2012. Graduates who are planning to attend convocation must submit an application by May 15,  2012. The application form is  available online at MyMRU. More information is available here.
 
STOPGap Call for Submissions

The English Students Society (ESS) is calling for submissions to its next
issue of STOPGap, a literary magazine devoted to showcasing the creative
talent of MRU students. This issue will focus on the theme of NATURE and
the ENVIRONMENT.

Acceptable submissions include prose, poetic, or visual work including: short stories, postcard fiction, poetry, sketches, photography, formal essay, painting, collage, etc.

  • Short Stories and Essays should be between 3-5 pages
  • Postcard Fiction and poems should be between 250-300 words
  • Any Photographs or visual poetry should be standard photo size 4X6

Scholarship and Awards Information

 The Department of English Student Awards Application for the 2011-2012 academic year is now available online. Please note the deadline is April 30, 2012. Detailed infomation about awards administered by the Department of English is available here. For information on all Mount Royal University awards, please consult the scholarships and bursaries page.

Mount Royal English Students' Society

The Mount Royal English Students' Society is dedicated to enriching students' learning experiences as well as creating a sense of community within the English program and the Calgary literary scene.  Current, as well as prospective, English students are encouraged to participate in the activites and special events the Association orgranizes during the academic year. Past activities have included creative writing workshops, nights out with professors, peer editing, writing competitions, poetry readings, film viewings, and "field trips" to literary- related events around Calgary. Memberships is free.  For more information please email the ESS directly.
