Political Science

Though its modern, scientific roots were formed during the 17th century, the formal study of politics has a long and compelling history — dating back more than two millennia, to Plato and Aristotle, whose ideas are still studied today.

Modern political science is essentially the systematic study of governmental power and authority and how these shape the organization of nations and communities, as well as how they impact individuals. In short, it is the study of all aspects of governing institutions, the decisions these institutions take and how they impact us all.

However, as an academic discipline, political science is much more than this. It explores the meanings of such concepts as right-centre-left, the good life, justice, equality, freedom, rights, democracy and so on. Political science also includes the study of:

  • war
  • diplomacy
  • international relations
  • the economy
  • religion
  • gender
  • inequality
  • ethnicity
  • the courts
  • law and the constitution
  • elections and political parties
  • interest groups
  • the media
  • politicians

The discipline of political science provides students with a range of valuable analytical skills to better understand their country and their world.
