Near Eastern Archaeology; ceramics; archaeometry; ancient history & languages of the Near East ; archaeological theory and methodology; ancient commerce

  1. Director & Principal Investigator, Wadi Raghwan Archaeological Project (WRAP), Republic of Yemen;
  2. Co-Director, Dhofar Project, with Brigham Young University, Sultanate of Oman.

Research Interests:

  1. The focus of the WRAP is two-fold: (1) to investigate the entire history of hominid/human interaction within the Wadi Raghwan; and (2) to examine the archaeological evidence for commerce conducted via camel caravans and the support networks that commerce required. Both foci involve extensive and intensive mapping and reconnaissance surveys, excavation of various kinds of sites, geophysical and geological analyses, epigraphic and rock art surveys, floral and faunal studies (modern and ancient), and ethnoarchaeology of the traditional communities within the wadi system.
  2. The focus of the Dhofar Project is upon recovery of the evidence for occupation in the Wadi Mughsayl and Wadi Sayq systems within the southern coastal regime of the Dhofar Province, Oman, especially as it might relate to camel caravan and maritime commerce of frankincense and myrrh.

Materials from both projects are brought back to Mount Royal and other institutions for conservation, study, and analysis; these are used in hands-on classroom assignments and research projects for students, as well as for volunteer activities. I also organize an academic and public lecture series on all aspects of the Old World, “Old World Researchers”.
