David Allwright is the Associate Dean of the Bissett School of Business at Mount Royal University. Dr. Allwright has taught courses in Strategic Management, Environmental Management, Accounting, and Finance. He is the former Chair of the Bachelor of Commerce University Transfer program, the Applied Degree in Nonprofit Studies, and the General Business Administration, Human Resources, Marketing, and Insurance programs. Before joining MRU, Dr. Allwright taught Accounting and Strategic Management courses at the University of Calgary. He continues his association with the U of C where he teaches a course in Environmental Management in the Master of Science in Energy and the Environment at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ) in Quito, Ecuador.

His research interests include understanding the development of competitively valuable organizational capabilities as they relate to the emerging fields of strategic issues management and sustainable development. He conducts research into the capabilities and strategies that provide organizations with superior competitive advantages under conditions of dynamic global forces. David has conducted research into the problems resource extraction companies have faced when entering socially- and environmentally-inhospitable regions. He has also explored the capabilities that organizations have developed as a result of those experiences.

Dr. Allwright has written case studies and articles on issues concerning sustainability and environmental management. He has also co-authored a Canadian adaptation of a U.S. accounting textbook; Introduction to Financial Accounting: A User Perspective.

Dr. Allwright earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree (with Distinction) in accounting from the University of Calgary. He completed a Ph.D. in Strategic Management from the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary in 2002. His dissertation title is “Detecting Social Landmines: Strategic Issues Management as an Integrative Theory of the Firm”. David has 15 years experience in the banking, retail, hospitality, and oil & gas industries as a controller and general manager. He has worked as a fur trader and store manager for the Hudson’s Bay Company in the Canadian arctic, and administration & investment banking for the Royal Trust Corporation (now Royal Bank). Additionally he has managed a chain of hotels for a real estate holding company, and worked as a production accountant for Imperial Oil Resources Ltd.

David is an avid photographer and golfer. Many of his photographs are displayed around the business school.
