Education: Gary completed his Bachelor of Physical Education at the University of Calgary where he played varsity rugby and volleyball. Gary pursued his love of sport by entering into the graduate program at the University of Montana. He completed his Masters of Science with the focus of his investigation revolving around the relationship between risk behaviour and the social psychology of sport.
Current Work: Gary’s areas of expertise include sport philosophy, sport literature and sociological and psychological foundations in sport and physical activity. He is a member of the North American Society for Sport History a the International Sport Literature Association and recently hosted the Sport History Annual Conference. Gary’s interests rest in the phenomena of human movement and its significance with regards to the effect of sport in society as it impacts history, philosophy, psychology, and sociology.
Instructor Profile: Gary has been teaching and coaching in the Physical Education department for the past 35 years. Gary is an alumni coach for the men’s Mount Royal College varsity volleyball program and led his teams successfully for ten years.
Community Service/Research Interests:
Gary is recognized, internationally, for his contributions in the field of Sport History. He has appeared on national TV and Radio with regards to his expertise in this field of study.
Gary has dedicated countless hours and energy to various college wide committees over his years at Mount Royal College. He has served over 5 terms on Academic Council, acted as Faculty Chief negotiator for Collective Agreement bargaining, and served on multiple hiring committees.
