Education: Mark completed his doctoral dissertation in the field of measurement and evaluation with particular focus on practical, performance-based examinations in athletic therapy. He created an on-line assessment tool that could be used in a wi-fi environment to assess athletic therapy students working on clinical internships. The validity and reliability of the tool was statistically established as well as the tool’s effectiveness as a teaching instrument for the orthopedic assessment clinical construct.

Mark completed his MSc. at the University of Manitoba studying the exercise modulating effect on migraine headache incidence. Mark began his education at the University of Manitoba with an undergraduate degree in Physical Education and specialized as an athletic therapist within that program.

Current Work: Mark is currently the chair of the Physical Education department (since 2003) and was the Athletic Therapy program coordinator for a number of years prior. Mark teaches in the Athletic Therapy program and performs educational research across multiple disciplines at the post-secondary level.

Instructor Profile: Mark began at Mount Royal in 1994 as both an instructor in the Physical Education department and as the head Athletic Therapist for Cougar Athletics. In service to both these groups, Mark was instrumental in the design and development of the clinic at Mount Royal (Optimal Therapies). Since 1997 Mark has focused primarily in an academic role at the College and has lead a team to create the current Athletic Therapy curriculum establishing a collaborative relationship with a number of post-secondary institutions.

Mark was named one of Calgary’s Top 40 under 40 class of 2006 and was presented the Distinguished Educator Award by the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association membership.


Community Service/Research Interests:

Mark served as a long-time member of the Canadian Athletic Therapists Association (CATA) Education Committee (1993-2001). He joined the CATA Board of Directors in 2001 and served as the national association’s president in 2002. Mark completed 3 years as a member of the CATA International relations committee and is currently an advisor to the World Federation of Athletic Training and Therapy (WFATT) Communication Committee. Mark served on the Alberta Athletic Therapy Association (AATA) Board of Directors (1994-2000) and is currently involved with the AATA on an ad hoc committee to establish professional regulation for athletic therapists in Alberta.

Mark has been involved with the Canadian Professional Rodeo Sport Medicine Team (CPRSMT) as the Athletic Therapy coordinator (from 1999 to present) and is currently the president of the Sport Medicine Team/Society. Mark has three beautiful daughters who are very active with soccer in Calgary. Mark has coached and acted as their team therapist over the years. Mark enjoys being physically active and cherishes noon-hour basketball or squash at Mount Royal. He loves the outdoors and can often be seen biking, roller-blading, running, hiking or skiing with his family.
