Paul Varella

MBA (finance), Ph.D. (strategy and global management),  University of Calgary

After 12 years of experience in different businesses, Paul received his MBA (finance) and his Ph.D. (strategy and global management) from the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary. He taught at Haskayne and at the School of Global Management and Leadership at Arizona State University. His research interest focuses on organizational social capital and leadership, particularly at strategic levels.

During his research work, he has developed close ties to the business community in Calgary. Recently, he gathered data for a unique database about social capital and leadership in top management teams. He is particularly interested in understanding how leadership at the upper echelons generates organizational wide consequences, especially in relationship to organizational social capital.

Paul has presented his research at several Academy of Management meetings, and at the meetings of The Administrative Sciences Association of Canada. Earlier this year, a presentation of his research at the Third Sprott Doctoral Symposium (Carleton University) was recognized as the runner-up paper for the Best Paper award. He has published in the The Leadership Quarterly and in Monographs in Leadership and Management.
