Vance received his commission from the Canadian Armed Forces in 1989 and continues to serve as a logistics officer with Naval Reserve. After graduating from the University of Calgary with both a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1993 and the Enterprise Development Master of Business Administration degree in 1995, Vance worked for five years as the Senior Development Officer for the Faculty of Management's Entrepreneurship and Management Project Centre. During that time he also started teaching for the faculty's Entrepreneurship and Innovation Area.
Vance assisted with curriculum design for the University of Calgary MBA and the Minor in Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development for the Faculty of Engineering. He was nominated for teaching excellence awards at the University of Calgary in 1997, 1998 and 2000. In 1996, Vance founded the Prairie Mill Bread Company and grew the company to three retail stores with over 35 employees before selling the venture in 2002.
In August 2000, Vance joined Mount Royal as a full-time instructor in the Entrepreneurship area. He also continues to teach on a part-time basis for the University of Calgary. During his academic career, Vance has presented at many national and international conferences including the Canadian Council for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (CCSBE) and the Entrepreneurship Education Forum of the Consortium for Entrepreneurship Education and has published four articles in refereed journals. Vance has also had some of his experiential learning exercises published in leading Entrepreneurship textbooks. Vance is currently the vice-president programs for CCSBE and is also the lead faculty advisor for ACE Mount Royal (Advancing Canadian Entrepreneurship), Mount Royal's student business society.
Vance has served on the boards of the University of Calgary Alumni Association, the N. Eldon Tanner Management Society, the Calgary Branch of the Naval Officers Association of Canada and he was a member of the University of Calgary Senate for three terms. He served as an auxiliary constable with the RCMP and he currently is a volunteer with the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede, Scouts Canada, St. John Ambulance and Junior Achievement of Southern Alberta. In 2002, Vance was awarded the Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal for Community Service. In 2004, Vance was named one of Calgary ’s “Top 40 Under 40”; the “National Faculty of the Year” by ACE Canada; and was awarded a Teaching Excellence Award by the Student Association of Mount Royal.
