Valerie Kinnear is an associate professor in accounting. Previous administrative appointments include: academic unit chair Management, Marketing, and Humans Resources, 2008/11; program chair Financial Services, Supply Chain Management, and Quantitative Methods, 2004/08; acting dean, 1999/2000; program chair Accounting and Insurance, 1997/99; and acting director, Business Education and Training, (Faculty of Continuing Education and Extension), 1996/97.

As a full-time faculty member in the Bissett School of Business at Mount Royal since 1989, Valerie has taught introductory, intermediate and advanced Financial Accounting as well as Introductory Management Accounting courses. She is the co-recipient of the Chartered Accountants Education Foundation (CAEF) 2011 Teaching Prize for her work on team-based learning in accounting with Joan Barlow.

Valerie is the lead Canadian author with J. J. Weygandt, D. E. Kieso, P. D. Kimmel, and B. Trenholm of Accounting Principles, Fifth Canadian Edition, John Wiley & Sons Canada, 2010. She co-authored the Fourth Canadian Edition released in 2007 and was a collaborator of the Third Canadian Edition released in 2004.

Valerie has been involved in the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta (ICAA) student education program in a variety of roles including instructing for several years in the Institute's qualification programs and UFE preparation program, marking examinations, authoring examination questions and serving from 1996 to 1999 as a member of the ICAA Examinations Committee. She also served as a member of the Professional Services Policy Board with the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants from 1993 to 1999.

Prior to joining Mount Royal, Valerie taught Accounting in the Faculty of Management at the University of Calgary on a full-time basis in 1982/83 and on a part-time basis from 1986 to 1988. Previous professional accounting experience includes articling student/audit senior, Price Waterhouse 1980/82; manager, Farvolden and Company, Chartered Accountants 1986/88; and partner, Kinnear & Smistad, Chartered Accountants 1988/1995.

Valerie has a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Calgary, 1978, a Master of Science in Business Administration from the University of British Columbia, 1986 and earned her CA designation in 1982.
