Nonprofit Management Minor

Make a living while making a difference. The nonprofit sector in Canada employs over 2 million Canadians and accounts for almost 9% of the economy — larger than oil, gas and mining combined. Currently there are over 175,000 nonprofit organizations providing services in the areas such as healthcare, arts, culture, recreation, human services, sports education, environment and international development. Mount Royal offers the only minor in nonprofit management in an undergraduate business degree.  

Courses cover a broad range of issues including public policy, governance, service delivery, economics, volunteerism, social change and community development.

Career choices

Demand is high for graduates of this program. Some students even receive offers of employment before they graduate. Career possibilities and positions are diverse in this large sector, which employs more than two million Canadians. Some students have completed the program and launched their careers as executive directors.

Your job title could be:

• Fund development manager — evaluate the financial needs of an organization, then create and implement a plan to secure funding.
• Program manager — lead the overall planning and management of a program.
• Administrator of a non-governmental organization (NGO) — manage all aspects of business administration.

You could also be an agency administrator, assessment coordinator, marketing and event manager or program planner.

Research opportunities

Students can participate in community-based research through the Institute for Nonprofit Studies.

Further education

The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) prepares you for Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs as well as other graduate studies.
