| Start Smart Stay Safe Children and Family Projects presents: "Too Safe For Their Own Good" with Dr. Michael Ungar August 30, 2011 Lincoln Park Room (J301) 7 - 9 p.m. Over his years of practice, Dr. Ungar has seen a disturbing trend: a connection between all the security we offer children and troubling behaviors like drug abuse, early sexual activity, violence and truancy. In this presentation, Dr. Ungar will discuss ways to offer our children and teenagers the right amount of risk and responsibility. He will share what he has learned from families who have found ways to provide their children with the ‘risk-takers advantage’. |

New Horizons in Experience Based Brain Development:
What Do Parents, Caregivers, and Doctors Need to Know Join colleagues, community members and parents for this special presentation by established developmental pediatrician, Dr. Margaret Clarke.
Her presentation reviewed new information from the science of early childhood development and provide key messages and practical ideas about applying this information in real life settings with children. Dr. Clarke and her team focus on bringing practical aspects of science to parents and professionals so that they can enhance their practice.

MRU HREB Tutorial - by Dr. Sean Maw

MRU’s Human Research Ethics Board (HREB) requires all applicants to HREB for ethics clearance to have completed one of two tutorials: either an MRU HREB tutorial or the Tri-Council Policy (TCPS) online tutorial.
Dr. Sean Maw, Chair of HREB, has developed a highly interactive and engaging tutorial for MRU faculty. Come to this session to explore the complexities of ethics with human subjects with a view to successfully completing your next HREB application.
Upon completion of this tutorial, you will be sent an HREB tutorial certificate by the Office of Research Services.

A Journey of Respect and Support

Centre for Child Well-Being offered a presentation on ethical research practice with vulnerable populations. The special guest (three of whom were joined from Vancouver on Skype) have been involved in various phases of Sue’s research as subjects, researchers, and coordinators.
The purpose of the seminar is to raise the bar on what is generally accepted to be ethical research practice (as required by ethics boards) by planning and practicing beyond the established standards of an ethics review.
