Luba has been a registered midwife in Alberta since 2007, when she graduated from the Midwifery Education Program at Ryerson University. Like all midwives in Alberta at the time, Luba was thrilled to see midwifery services become publicly funded in 2009. She is equally excited about the Bachelor of Midwifery program starting this fall, and honored to be part of its development.
Before becoming a midwife, Luba completed a PhD in Linguistics at Rutgers University in New Jersey. While in academia, Luba also spent several years volunteering in women's health organizations, including a women's shelter, a reproductive health centre, and a centre for teen families. These experiences in advocating for women and their families led her to her career in midwifery. Luba was especially impressed by the Canadian midwives' commitment to informed choice and continuity, and these continue to be a large part of what makes being a midwife in Alberta a joy and privilege for her.
While a student in the Midwifery Education Program at Ryerson University, like many other students, Luba got the baby bug and had her daughter, Lada. After graduation, Luba and her family moved to Alberta where Luba joined Briar Hill Midwives. Luba continues to work with her midwifery partners at Briar Hill Midwives; it is a dream come true to work with midwives who share the same philosophy of care and commitment to their practice.
Luba's partner, Drew, is a Nurse Practitioner and both he and her daughter are the most understanding and supportive midwifery family. They find balance in family time spent skiing, hiking, biking, and camping.
