Addiction & Mental Health Issues in the Criminal Justice System
Provincial Court Judge Joanne Durant and CPS Superintendent Richard Hinse
Individuals with mental health and addictions challenges represent an overwhelming majority of those charged with criminal offences in Alberta. Many of these individuals commit offences (often repeatedly) as a direct consequence of mental health difficulties; addictions; or a resulting lifestyle that includes inadequate housing, little community or family support, no employment prospects, poor health, and self medication with drugs or alcohol.

Understanding Addiction
Dr. Gabor Maté & Diana Krecsy
When: Nov. 21, 2012 from 8:30am - 12:30pm
Where: Leacock Theatre
The Calgary Drug Treatment Court is a multi-disciplinary model of intervention and treatment which supports clients who have addictions, mental illness and justice-related issues. Ms. Diana Krecsy will present its model which is unique to Alberta but not unique to Canada and elsewhere; therefore, empirical evidence on its process and effectiveness will be presented all of which connects with Dr. Mate’s presentation of the causes of addiction and effective and ineffective treatment methods. Dr. Mate’s address will offer empirical evidence which refutes conventional models explaining the causes of addiction such as biological predisposition and social learning. His evidence and hypothesis challenge our beliefs and understanding of the root causes of addiction, the impact those causes have on our development, and where intervention and treatment have historically failed and in which direction they need to focus.
The intent for this event is to present attendees with information that will challenge their thoughts and beliefs concerning addiction. The event will provide an exchange of knowledge, share empirical data, offer colleagues an opportunity to network, and bring professionals, faculty, staff and students together so that new knowledge will inform and impact their studies, teaching, and/or practice.

What makes AARC unique?
Natalie Imbach, Clinical Director from AARC
When: Sept. 19, 2012 from 12 - 2 pm
Where: Jenkins Theatre (I115)
Research proves that management of adolescents with drug and/or alcohol problems requires more specialized treatment programming and greater diversity of services than adult programming. For adolescents who are experiencing addiction, treatment is compounded because of the adolescent’s age, immaturity, general lack of non-chemical coping skills, and the emotional and developmental lag. Natalie’s personal and professional accomplishments combine for a powerful message of hope for the young people and families in treatment at AARC today.
