Working with expectant mothers and infants can be very rewarding. Learn how best to care for these clients with Mount Royal University’s Advanced Studies in Perinatal and Neonatal Nursing certificate. This program is designed for registered nurses who want to gain confidence in this area and increase their career options. Undergraduate nurses may also take one course as a senior nursing option.

Choose your specialty

Depending on your area of specialization, you can complete the certificate requirements with five courses. You can choose to focus your studies in:

  • neonatal nursing
  • perinatal nursing

Education to fit your schedule

You may register for either part- or full-time studies. Part-time students will be granted five years from the time of initial registration in the program to complete the requirements for the certificate.

Real work experience

A clinical course component lets you start putting your new knowledge to work. Faculty will determine the 210-hour instructor-guided clinical practicum placement depending on the availability of clinical facilities and on the your learning needs, skill development and competence. Clinical courses can be completed where you work or live. The clinical course is offered in the fall, winter and spring semesters.

Additional benefits

All courses in this program may be reported as nursing practice hours for renewal of College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) registration.

Further education

Transfer agreements exist with Alberta universities. You are encouraged to check with the university you wish to transfer to before taking any courses.
