Career trends

Because our ETOL program places equal emphasis on "hard" (technical) and "soft" (interpersonal) skills, you'll be well prepared for a variety of career opportunities. These include:

  • heritage and ecological interpretation
  • small business development
  • outdoor education via outdoor centres
  • inbound and outbound tour operation and guiding
  • eco and adventure planning and management
  • working with special populations such as youth and youth-at-risk
  • eco and adventure advocacy
  • parks protection and management
  • government parks and recreational facilities

It is important for you to understand that the ETOL program prepares you to work in the broad field of Ecotourism, Adventure Tourism and Outdoor Pursuits rather than a specific job in this field. Your personal initiative and goals will have a great bearing on your success — this is true of any program and life in general.

Whatever career path you choose, you can expect to work closely with the public and with other professionals in the field. The balance of indoor and outdoor work will depend, of course, on your specific position, but in almost all cases you can expect to work at least some evenings and weekends.

The demand for good people in this field has risen dramatically during the past decade or more and you can likely expect that to continue, particularly as members of the baby boom generation begin to retire.
