I have been a member of the nursing faculty at Mount Royal and in the past several years educating professionals at a distance in the Advanced Studies in Mental Health Certificate program for over 27 years. Prior to coming to MRU I worked in in-patient and out-patient psychiatry, ICU and in cardiopulmonary studies. I am a committed lifelong learner and I continue to maintain a practice focus to ensure what I am teaching reflects the practice setting and evidence-based practice.
I volunteered for several years in a walk-in counselling clinic (Eastside Clinic-Wood's Homes) which focused on single session therapy. It was an incredible learning experience working along side a variety of competent professionals and I obtained supervision skills through this experience. In the past I volunteered for a community service called Exit. This was funded through Wood's Homes and provided a place for street kids to drop in and get assistance with legal, counselling or medical problems for example. I also ran a wellness group for seniors with lower incomes and who had a variety of needs.
Later I worked casually in a community mental health setting at the 8th & 8th Community Health Centre and also with the Mobile Crisis Response team. In more recent years I have spent time casually working in psychiatric emergency until I took time to complete course work towards my PhD.
I look forward to those who want to become part of our learning community within Advanced Studies in Mental Health.
