The Multi-jurisdictional Midwifery Bridging Project (MMBP) is a 7- month bridging program for qualified midwives educated outside of Canada. The program is designed to help foreign-educated midwives work in Canada’s provincial health care system. The MMBP will assist midwives to prepare to meet the requirements for registering and practising as a midwife in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

Some candidates may be required to take Pre-Requisite courses, including: English communication and language skills upgrading, an Orientation to Canadian Healthcare course, and basic computer skills training.  Information about these pre-requisite courses will be provided through Mount Royal University, Calgary, AB. The remainder of the program (intensive courses) will be offered by the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC. Some coursework will take place through distance education. Three-month or longer clinical placements will be available in the home community where possible.

The MMBP is a project of the Canadian Midwifery Regulators Consortium in collaboration with the University of British Columbia, Mount Royal University and l'Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières. This pilot project has been made possible through a financial contribution from Health Canada, in collaboration with the Western and Northern Health Human Resources Planning Forum and its member jurisdictions.

The MMBP is designed to be offered on an annual basis. Future offerings of the MMBP will be dependent upon an evaluation of the 2009 pilot and available funding.
