| interior designers, architects, home builders | physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nutritionists, pharmacists |
| music and art teachers | computer professionals |
| kinesiologists | therapists specializing in areas such as recreation, music, art, reminiscence |
| financial planners | retirement advisors |
| social workers | marketing and sales professionals |
| nurses and nursing assistants | politicians |

| social marketers | aging-in-place specialists |
| volunteer coordinators |
Two streams offered
You have the choice of two streams in the Studies in Aging program:
Aging — prepares you to work effectively with older adults in numerous health and human services areas. A variety of health care professionals, as well as those in human service areas and business communities, can broaden their knowledge of aging, adapt previously learned knowledge and skills and acquire new knowledge for working with older adults. Aging will be examined from both personal and professional perspectives. All courses emphasize wellness and health promotion in later life.
Entrepreneurship —- will be of interest to individuals whose current or future career plans require an understanding of business skills required to manage or launch a small business initiative. With Canada’s aging population, knowing how best to work with and market to seniors will be very beneficial.
Benefits
By completing this certificate program you will:
Flexible studies combined with professional support
All courses are offered online through distance learning. In addition to the flexibility of online learning, students receive personal support from knowledgeable instructors. The business courses are offered at Mount Royal but students outside Calgary or needing accommodating study schedules can take comparable courses at other universities or colleges and arrange transfer credit. Please contact the Program Coordinator (mrogerson@mtroyal.ca) for information. Both full-time and part-time enrolment is possible, and you will have five years to complete the program.
Additional course offerings
SAGE 2401 and SAGE 3403 are also currently available to undergraduate students attending MRU. The courses have the additional benefit of being identified as General Education Courses (Level 3). Both courses are offered by distance delivery.
Some courses in this program are transferable to other universities and colleges. Gerontology courses may be reported as nursing practice hours for renewal of College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) registration. As well, they can be accepted as proof of continuing education competency for nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals.
