With today’s aging population, professionals who specialize in healthy aging play a more important role than ever before. Mount Royal's Studies in Aging Certificate Program is designed for those who already have a diploma or degree from an accredited post-secondary institution. The certificate program takes an in-depth approach to meeting the multi-faceted needs of older adults and will appeal to a variety of professionals including:

interior designers, architects, home builders physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nutritionists, pharmacists
music and art teachers computer professionals
kinesiologists therapists specializing in areas such as recreation, music, art, reminiscence
financial planners retirement advisors
social workers marketing and sales professionals
nurses and nursing assistants politicians
psychologists business owners
social marketers aging-in-place specialists
volunteer coordinators  

Two streams offered

You have the choice of two streams in the Studies in Aging program:

Aging — prepares you to work effectively with older adults in numerous health and human services areas. A variety of health care professionals, as well as those in human service areas and business communities, can broaden their knowledge of aging, adapt previously learned knowledge and skills and acquire new knowledge for working with older adults. Aging will be examined from both personal and professional perspectives. All courses emphasize wellness and health promotion in later life.

Business and Entrepreneurship —- will be of interest to individuals whose current or future career plans require an understanding of business skills required to manage or launch a small business initiative. With Canada’s aging population, knowing how best to work with and market to seniors will be very beneficial.

Flexible studies combined with professional support

All  courses are offered online through distance learning. In addition to the flexibility of online learning, students receive personal support from knowledgeable instructors. The business courses are offered at Mount Royal but students outside Calgary or needing accommodating study schedules can take comparable courses at other universities or colleges and arrange transfer credit. Please contact the Program Coordinator (mrogerson@mtroyal.ca) for information. Both full-time and part-time enrolment is possible, and you will have five years to complete the program.

Additional course offerings

SAGE 4401 and SAGE 4403 are also currently available to undergraduate students attending MRU. The courses have the additional benefit of being identified as General Education Courses (Level 3). Both courses are offered by distance delivery.

  • New for Fall 2010 is SAGE 4401 - Perspectives in Aging, offered as a face-to-face general education credit. MRU students register online.
  • New for Winter 2011 is PHED 3385 - Physical Activity and the Older Adult. This course is delivered onsite as an elective and is also a transfer credit to the University of Calgary Faculty of Kinesiology.

Some courses in this program are transferable to other universities and colleges. Gerontology courses may be reported as nursing practice hours for renewal of College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) registration. As well, they can be accepted as proof of continuing education competency for nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare professionals.
