- There are 161,000 nonprofit organizations in Canada of which 56% are registered charities.
- The nonprofit sector employs two million Canadians.
- Charitable sector revenues total $112 billion.
- The top five areas supported by nonprofit organizations are sports and recreation, religion, social services, granting/fundraising/volunteer promotions, and arts and culture.
- Canadians volunteer two billion hours annually (equal to one million full-time jobs).
- Over half of the nonprofit organizations in Canada have no staff and nearly two-thirds have revenues of less than $100,000.
- Half of all nonprofits have problems planning for the future, recruiting volunteers and obtaining board members.
Giving patterns
(Based on the National survey of giving, volunteering and participating, 2003)
- Canada has a total of 22 million donors.
- About 78% of Canadians made financial donations to charities, totaling more than $5 billion.
- Approximately 6.5 million volunteers in Canada contribute 1.05 billion hours of work, the equivalent of 549,000 full-time jobs each year in Canada.
- In Alberta, 85% of Albertans made financial donations totaling $729 million. The average annual donation in Alberta was $369, the second highest among all provinces.
- Four out of 10 Albertans volunteer contributing an average of 139 hours each year, for a total of 127 million hours.
