Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)

Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) is a 240‐hour introductory EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teacher training course for non‐native speakers of English. This course will provide you with the tools, strategies and knowledge you need to be successful as an English language teacher of both adults and young learners in your home country. 

You will earn two separate certificates: the ACE TESOL Certificate, focused on teaching adults, and the ACE Certificate in Teaching English to Young Learners.

Assessment

Throughout the course students will be required to complete various assessment tasks including an observation report, lesson plan portfolios, microteaching (mini in-class teaching demonstrations) and tests. 

Entry requirements

Applicants must be non-native speakers of English, have an interest in teaching English as a Foreign Language in their home country, and demonstrate sufficient English language proficiency.

If you are already a student in the Mount Royal Languages Institute, you can take TEFL if you have passed any of these levels with strong listening and speaking marks: EAP1, EAP2, EAP3, EAC1, EAC2.

If you are new to Mount Royal, you can take TEFL if you achieve a result of EAP2 or higher on the Languages Institute Placement Test and show strength in listening and speaking during the Placement Test oral interview. The following scores give approximate equivalencies for the EAP2 level; however, all new Mount Royal students must test into EAP2 with the Languages Institute Placement Test:

  • TOEFL iBT® - overall score of 75 showing strength in the listening and speaking scores
  • IELTS (Academic Test) - overall score of 6.0 with strength in the listening and speaking scores

Course fees and materials

Local student fee: $2785

International student fee: $3025 (includes compulsory health insurance)

Materials: approximately $120 + GST (two textbooks and two manuals) ‐ available at the Mount Royal BookStore.

Registration process

The first step is to register for Mount Royal's Full-Time English Language Program and pay full tuition.

Local students will automatically be scheduled for a placement test. The test will be within one month of the start date of the program. International students should contact Silvia Rossi at srossi@mtroyal.ca to schedule a placement test.

If the placement test is successful (see Entry Requirements section above), the student may take TEFL. If the placement test is unsuccessful, the student may either take one of Mount Royal’s other full-time English language programs to improve their proficiency, or they may request a refund.
