Communication Skills for Health Professionals

Citizenship and Immigration Canada funding is available in 2012 and 2013  for a number of internationally educated health professionals (IEHPs) who have Permanent Resident status. Funding covers the tuition fee, course materials and transportation.  IEHPs who are Canadian citizens are welcome to apply but cannot be funded. CSHP is also receiving program funding from Alberta Health and Wellness during 2011-2012.

What is Communication Skills for Health Professionals?

This is a 12 week (270 hour) course that assists IEHPs from a variety of disciplines increase their cultural competence, communication skills and strategies, and language to work effectively with culturally diverse clients and colleagues.  From September 2012, the same course will be offered at Grant MacEwan University in Edmonton, Alberta. The course is also offered at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, British Columbia as "Professional Communication for Internationally Educated Health Professionals".

Who can apply?

This course is aimed at internationally educated Midwives, Nurses and Physicians who want to improve their English language proficiency, professional communication skills, and understanding of professional workplace culture in order to:
•     access bridging programs specific to their professional discipline,
•     improve their employment options in a Canadian healthcare context,
•     take competency exams in their field, and/or
•     receive an orientation to the Canadian healthcare system.
