Program Information

What type of course is it?

Communication Skills for Health Professionals uses a performance-based approach. We prioritize language as behaviour and give importance to immediate feedback to develop your language proficiency. Through direct, individual feedback in repeated practice situations, you internalize the expected language performance in relevant health care delivery interactions.

In order to internalize language as behaviour, you practice language in a variety of controlled role plays, and semi-rehearsed scenarios that we film. You receive structured feedback on your individual performance and specific advice for how to improve your exchange with patients, patients’ families, and colleagues.

What makes this course special?

•     A pre and post-language assessment through the Institutional CELBAN
•     Orientation to the Canadian Healthcare System, Culture and Context (University of
Toronto) course is integrated into the curriculum.
•      Simulation Patients are used in semi-rehearsed filmed performances.
•      A Health Professional Consultant attends class twice a week to give clinical and
       professional feedback and information sessions.
•      Guest speakers are invited from MRU Faculty of Health and Community Studies and
Calgary’s non-profit organizations with a health related focus.
