ACE TESOL Diploma program

The ACE TESOL Diploma is an advanced teacher training course designed for practicing ESL teachers who are interested in further exploring the theory and practice of ESL teaching.

The ACE TESOL Diploma course is:

  • 150 hours of online study (100 modules)
  • A 30-hour practicum
  • A practical and task-based learning experience
  • Taught by professional, qualified, experienced trainers
  • Based upon the most current teaching theory and methodologies
  • Three terms (one year) in length with start dates in September, January or May
  • Recognized by TESL Canada for Professional Certificate Standard Two

Requirements

The prerequisite for the Diploma program is TESL Canada professional certification at Standard One Permanent (or equivalent). This means that applicants must already have completed a TESL Canada approved certificate-level program and have taught adult ESL for a minimum of 1,000 hours. Applicants whose first language is not English must satisfy the English Language Proficiency requirements for Mount Royal credit programs by providing a recent score on an accepted English proficiency test. (click here for specific score requirements).

Assessment

Each of the 100 modules in the ACE Diploma program is comprised of lecture notes and a task journal. Students submit task journals to their instructor on an ongoing basis for feedback and assessment. There is also an Observation Report and three Term Exams.

Practicum

The 30-hour practicum is divided into 20 hours of classroom observation and 10 hours of supervised teaching. Students are responsible for arranging their own practicum placements; however, practicum placements must be approved by Mount Royal. Practicum work must be completed by the end date of a student's final term in the program.

Term dates

Students may begin in any term.  Students must complete three terms consecutively in order to earn the Diploma. Term dates are as follows:

  • Fall term: September 15 - December 15
  • Winter term: January 15 - April 15
  • Spring/Summer term: May 15 - August 15

Course fees

  • $785 per term for coursework
  • $345 for the 30-hour practicum
