Kodály (pron. koh-dye) Musicianship classes create a playful atmosphere where students use their own voices as their first instrument. They discover and develop aural discrimination using nursery rhymes, traditional chants, singing games, folk songs, selected art music, movement and dance. Visual, physical and aural experiences aid in exploring musical concepts such as in-tune singing, beat, rhythm, melody, form, phrasing, dynamics, tempo and timbre. Xylophones and other rhythm instruments are used to reinforce concepts first heard through singing. In advanced levels, the recorder is introduced to reinforce music reading skills. Small class sizes enable the instructor, children and parents to cultivate an intimate educational relationship.
Parental involvement is an essential component of the Kodály Program. Parents join the child for the last ten minutes of each class and are invited to participate in the entire class once a year. Sharing musical activities at home is encouraged and each week, children are provided with a take-home activity to reinforce the lesson. A fall workshop is held to acquaint parents with the repertoire, concepts and skill presented at each program level.
