Using their voices to speak and sing, and their bodies to move and dance, children in the Orff classes joyously progress from musical imitation to improvisation and literacy. The classes are based on things children like to do: sing, chant rhymes, clap, dance and keep a beat on anything near at hand. These instincts are directed into learning music by hearing and making music first, then reading and writing it later, when age appropriate. The children improvise and compose their own songs with the Orff instruments, as well as play together, as in a small orchestra. Through music pieces and songs from different cultures, epochs and styles, the children learn to appreciate a wide variety of music.
The unity of music, speech and movement are essential in the teaching based on the ideas of the Orff Schulwerk. Through nursery rhymes, finger games, songs and dances, children learn music in a playful and holistic way. They develop their intellectual, motor, emotional and social skills.
Orff Teaching Philosophy
As a graduate of the Orff Institute, instructor Holger Mauthe is guided by Carl Orff's belief that there is a hidden artist in EVERY human being. Through music and dance, Holger helps students explore their own creative expression in a non-competitive atmosphere. He fosters creativity, conveys musical knowledge and skills, and encourages the children to respect and appreciate each other.
