Please note: Theory classes are based on the RCM Examinations Speech Arts & Drama Syllabus, 2011 edition.
The Mount Royal Conservatory offers intensive Speech Arts theory courses based on the RCM Examinations Speech Arts and Drama Syllabus.
Theoretical Studies are important to students of the spoken arts, providing dimension to the practical work. The Speech Arts & Drama Theory curriculum provides insight into the production of voice and speech sounds, performance techniques, the history of literature including poetry and drama, and the history and techniques of oratory and presentational speaking. These studies also provide enrichment to school work, particularly in Language Arts and English.
The aim of the speech arts and drama theory program is to fully prepare students for examinations based on the RCM Examinations syllabus, and to encourage an appreciation of literature, language, and the spoken and dramatic arts. Theoretical studies are most relevant when there is a clear connection to practical work, and this is an important principle of our approach. Students engage in their studies through reading, research, and discussion, carefully designed homework assignments and mock examinations.
Speech Arts theory requirements begin at the Grade Seven Practical examination level. Students at Grade Seven and above require both the practical exam and its theory co-requisite in order to receive a certificate for that grade.
Students should consult with their private teacher regarding the addition of theoretical studies to their individual program of study.
Registration for theory classes closes one week before the start date. For information or to register, call the Conservatory at 403.440.6821 or contact the Speech Arts & Drama Program Coordinator, 403.440.6981.
