Sheila Garrett

Sheila Garrett, Assistant Principal Bass of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, received her musical training at the Interlochen Arts Academy (Diploma), University of Michigan (Bachelor of Music Performance with Distinction, Blatt Seigel Award for Double Bass), and the Guildhall School of Music in London, England (Certificate of Advanced Solo Studies). Summer studies include Tanglewood and the Interlochen Arts Camp where she was a featured soloist as a concerto competition winner. She has performed in recital at the conventions of Bassworks and the International Society of Bassists.

In addition to the CPO, Sheila has performed as a member of the Banff Festival Orchestra, Indiana University Festival Orchestra, Alberta Chamber Players, Calgary Chamber Ensemble, and Red Deer Symphony. As a chamber musician, she has collaborated with the Beau Quartet, Mount Royal Woodwind Quintet, Rosa Selvatica, and other Mount Royal College faculty and guest artists, with many performances recorded by CBC.

Sheila has served as coach for the Calgary Youth Orchestra and Banff International Festival of Youth Orchestras. She is also a faculty member at the University of Lethbridge School of Music. A Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award recipient, Sheila is an instructor and coach in the Academy and Credit, as well as General, programs at the Conservatory at Mount Royal University, and is bass coordinator of the Academy of Music.
