Ralph Maier was born in Calgary and took up the guitar at age twelve. He began formal studies of classical guitar first at Mount Royal College and later at the University of Calgary, where under the instruction of Jacob Salomons he received the degrees of Bachelor and Master of Music, and where he was invited to instruct lessons in Mr. Salomons' absence. He participated in The Banff Centre spring sessions with Oscar Ghiglia and has performed in masterclasses with Manuel Barrueco, Abel Carlevaro, Saron Isben and others.

Ralph Maier concertizes extensively in and around the Calgary area as a soloist and chamber musician. He has performed and competed in Canada, the United States and Germany, and has been a finalist in the CMC and Northwest Guitar Competition. Mr. Maier's teaching experience includes a two-year teaching hiatus in Pforzheim, Germany. He is currently on faculty at the Mount Royal University Conservatory in Calgary, Alberta.
