
Oboist David Sussman is celebrating his 24th season as Assistant Principal Oboe and English Horn in the Calgary Philharmonic. Calgary audiences know him for his expressive playing. He was born in Toronto and studied at the University of Toronto and the University of Michigan with Harry Sargous. Since coming to Calgary in 1981, Mr. Sussman has appeared as featured soloist with the CPO on many occasions with not only the oboe, but with the oboe d'amore and the English horn as well.
He has also appeared as soloist with the Calgary Bach Society, the University of Calgary Wind Ensemble, the Alberta Baroque Ensemble and the Kensington Sinfonia. In the summer of 2002, he was featured soloist for the Bio-Mechanical World Congress IV held in Calgary. Twice he has performed at annual conventions of the International Double Reed Society.
He has performed with the Mount Royal Wind Quintet and the chamber music groups Rosa Selvatica, Aubade, and Land's End. He has commissioned a new work for oboe and been heard many times on CBC Radio Two.
David is a dedicated and enthusiastic educator. He has taught oboe students of all ages and coached chamber music at the Mount Royal University Conservatory, the University of Calgary and the University of Lethbridge. For several years, he taught the adult education course entitled "Symphony Anyone?" for the Calgary Board of Education. For the past number of years, he has been known to Calgary audience members as a friendly voice from the orchestra through his articles in the CPO's Prelude magazine. He is also a CYA certified level 2 Sailing Instructor and teaches adult learn-to-sail classes. He and his wife have a busy household with three children.
