
A Canadian of Brazilian descent, Rubim combines the influences of his cultural heritage, his passion for Cuban music, and his dedication to the jazz tradition to push musical boundaries, plus keeps audiences enthralled and invigorated.
As a bassist, composer and music director, Rubim continues to expand his artistic vision with every project he undertakes. Possessing a strong talent for presenting vibrant and engaging music productions in any style, he has incorporated music, dance and art in his productions creating works that break down preconceptions. With a unique talent for bringing diverse individual artists into highly compelling collectives, Rubim continually contributes quality productions to Alberta’s art and cultural scene.
As an artist, Rubim has toured extensively throughout Canada performing at every major Jazz and Folk festival. He has toured the USA, Mexico, Cuba, Brazil, Chile, Europe and Asia. As well, he has produced concerts from the music of Birth of the Cool, Bitches Brew, and Brazilian music to World music, New music and Experimental music.
The River, his third solo release, garnered great critical and popular acclaim including a Western Canadian Music Award nomination for “Best Jazz Album” of 2009. The opening track has also been selected as CBC Radio's Tonic theme song. His bass playing demonstrates the maturity of his approach and validates his reputation as a key musician in the Western Canadian music industry.
Rubim is well known as bassist and a founding member of respected Latin-Jazz group Bomba, with whom he recorded four CDs and toured extensively. He is currently performing with Latin-Jazz group Caravan.
In the last seven years Rubim has been working extensively with Calgary’s Decidedly Jazz Danceworks. He has played bass for 10 productions and has acted as composer and musical director for 6 of those. In 2011 he composed the music for their new children’s production, the Great Jazz History Mystery.
As an educator Rubim is the bass instructor, teaches Jazz Improvisation and teaches Jazz Combo classes in the Mount Royal University Credit Music Department. He is the artistic director of the Mount Royal University Summer Jazz Camp and also the co-director of the Summit Jazz Series in Calgary. Rubim has taught workshops and masterclasses internationally and extensively in Western Canada. These workshops have included Jazz, Bass, Brazilian music, Cuban music, Improvisation, Creativity, Teambuilding, Professionalism, Leadership and Songwriting.
