Audition information

Entrance to the Academy Program for Gifted Youth is by audition only. Acceptance is determined by the Manager of the Academy, in consultation with other Conservatory faculty. Any gifted student in Calgary or surrounding area who shows an obvious talent is eligible to audition. Private teachers need not be affiliated with Mount Royal Conservatory.

Audition applications

Auditions are held in May each year. The deadline to apply for the 2012 – 2013 year is April 27, 2012.

New applicants for the Academy Program for Gifted Youth must fill out the online Audition Application form. Applicants will be notified of their audition date, time and location by e-mail, so completely filling out the Audition Application form is essential for consideration in the program.

For more information, or for assistance with the audition application process, contact the Academy Program Coordinator at 403.440.6832.

Audition requirements

Strings, piano, winds academy

Strings, Piano or Winds applicants must perform two contrasting pieces that demonstrate their artistic and technical ability.

Refer to the Strings, Piano, Winds Academy page for more details on the program.

*Note: The Academy Program audition for string and wind students also serves as an audition for the Conservatory Orchestral program. If you are auditioning for the Academy Program you will not need to re-audition for a Conservatory Orchestra. Students already in a Conservatory ensemble must bring their orchestral music to the audition and be prepared to play excerpts; others will be asked to sight-read.

Vocal academy

New Vocal Academy applicants must perform two contrasting selections from the classical voice repertoire, one of which must be in a language other than English.

Returning students must perform one selection in a language other than English.

Vocal Academy students are asked to arrive 15 minutes prior to their audition in order to rehearse with the collaborative pianist who will play for the audition.

A $25.00 cash fee is required.

Refer to the Vocal Academy page for more details.

Guitar academy

Guitar applicants should prepare two contrasting pieces and expect a short sight reading test and interview.

Refer to the Guitar Academy page for more details.

Audition results

Students are notified of audition results by mail in early July. It is the responsibility of each accepted student to make private lesson arrangements with his/her instructor of choice (Conservatory Faculty).

After you receive your acceptance letter, please make sure to fill out the online intent to register form. It is very important that you fill out this form as the information you provide is used to arrange chamber music groupings. If you do not fill out the intent to register form your place in the Academy cannot be guaranteed.

For more information, or for assistance with the audition acceptance process, contact the Academy Program Coordinator at 403.440.6832.
