Academy Theory
By taking students inside the minds of our composers from both the technical and creative perspectives, theory enhances their performing and listening powers thereby deepening their joy in music making and enriching their overall sense of creativity. A sound theory program also opens more academic options including university entrance. To these ends, the study of theory will be compulsory to the level of Grade 3 Harmony for Academy students who wish to graduate with an Academy Certificate. Grade 3 Harmony is the standard minimum university entrance requirement. After this level, it is the individual student's option to continue his or her theory studies. This means that theory is not compulsory every year, but that each student must forecast their schedules to eventually include at least Rudiments and Harmony 3. It is highly recommended that Academy students participate in a theory course each year.
Both group classes and private lessons are available. All group classes are taken within the General Studies Music Theory and History. Please refer to this link for course descriptions, Royal Conservatory co-requisite information, all class schedules and registration information.
Recognizing that students enter the Academy at different stages and with varying theory backgrounds, the theory levels are kept separate from the Academy performance levels. Incoming students may require a placement test to ensure that they are in the correct class. Returning students will be advised by their current Theory teacher as to which subject and level to register in for September. Academy students must register with one of Mount Royal College's theory teachers. Exceptions are made for out of town students.
Please Note: Theory classes may begin sooner than the regular Academy calendar to allow a full 32 week curriculum.
