The Academy of Music
at Mount Royal Conservatory
An enrichment program specifically developed to provide the highest quality of musical training for gifted young artists, The Academy is a balanced, performance based program where students have the opportunity to meet and perform with professional musicians and renowned teachers. They gain valuable experience by performing in a variety of settings for audiences of their peers, as well as for faculty members, clinicians and the public, and are able to progress musically at an accelerated pace. The Academy's reputation is known and respected throughout North America. Graduates who continue with their musical studies are much sought after by leading post-secondary music schools both in Canada and the United States.
Specific training includes sessions with renowned musicians in private lessons, small group classes and masterclasses, individual sessions with an accompanist, chamber music coaching, instruction in theory, aural skills and musical discoveries, frequent recitals aimed at developing confidence and stage presence, and participation in a large ensemble for those students who play orchestral instruments.
Emerging Artists Pilot Program
The Conservatory at Mount Royal University is pleased to announce that we will be expanding our Academy Program for Gifted Youth to accept a small group of post-secondary level emerging young artists to participate in our intensive performance studies program. This is in response to the many inquiries by students seeking an alternative to the traditional university system in Canada. Participants in this program will have access to the exceptional faculty at the Conservatory, both resident and visiting artists. Through consultation with faculty and the Manager, the program can be customized to meet the needs of each of the individual candidates, including potential collaborative ventures with other performing arts organizations, such as The Banff Centre. This intensive performance studies program does not preclude participation in academic credit studies at Mount Royal University or any other institution of the participant’s choice. We are also excited to announce that John Kadz, cello, has agreed to act as artistic advisor and will be accepting students to participate in this program. Entrance to this program will be limited to a small number of exceptional students. For further information, please contact Bill van der Sloot, Manager.
Academy Sponsorship
Funding for the Conservatory's Academy of Music Program was established in 1980 through a principal endowment from the Kahanoff Foundation.
Since that time over 30 corporate and private donors have contributed to ensure its continued success. Students pay only a nominal registration, but do not pay tuition. The Academy is grateful for the generous private support which has made this possible. We would also like to acknowledge the Alberta Foundation for the Arts for its support.
Academy of Music Admission Requirements
Entrance to the Academy of Music is by audition only. Acceptance is determined by the Manager of the Academy, in consultation with other Conservatory faculty. Any gifted student in Calgary or surrounding area who shows an obvious talent is eligible to audition. Private teachers need not be affiliated with MRC.
Please see Strings, Piano & Winds for the descriptions of the different levels of the Academy.
