Applications closed (May 15): Young Artists' Platform

The Young Artists’ Platform of the Calgary Organ Festival and Symposium offers a high-profile festival concert opportunity as a bridge from pre-professional study or competition success to an active concert career. Three emerging artists will be selected from an open application process to present evening solo organ concerts during the 2012 Calgary Organ Festival and Symposium.

The Young Artists’ Platform concerts will be scheduled during the period Oct. 26 to Nov. 3, 2012 on the following instruments:

Ahrend Orgelbau (2006), II/P, mechanical action (Norden temperament)

Casavant Frères (rebuilt 2002), IV/P, electric action

Casavant Frères (rebuilt 2002), IV/P, electric action

Applicants are invited to submit a proposed programme suited to one of the instruments listed above. Successful applicants may be asked to adjust their proposed programme to another suitable instrument and/or they may be asked to make repertoire changes in the case of duplicates.

Eligibility

  • Aged 30 years or under on Oct. 25, 2012

AND

  • Winner of any prize (including ‘audience prize,’ ‘Bach prize,’ etc.) in a regional, national, or international organ competition, or performance festival OR Winner of a prize or scholarship in a professional organ performance diploma examination (Associate or Fellowship) e.g. ARCCO, AAGO, ARCO, FRCCO, FAGO, FRCO. International equivalents will be considered

We will consider all applications that meet the above two criteria. As a guide only, previous successful applicants were enrolled in bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral programs in organ performance, and had not yet embarked on full-time professional careers.

Compensation Package

  • Round-trip economy air travel to and from Calgary
  • Hotel accommodation and per diem during the Festival and Symposium
  • Entry to all Festival and Symposium events
  • Archive CD recording of your concert

Application Requirements

  • Young Artists’ Platform programme proposal, indicating the proposed concert instrument (the programme should last around 90 minutes in total, including pauses between pieces, and one 15-minute intermission—ie. approximately 70 minutes of music)
  • A brief outline (c. 350 words) of the artistic vision behind the proposed programme (e.g. is there a theme linking the repertoire?) for marketing purposes
  • CD sound recording (unedited - preferably of a live concert performance): minimum 15 minutes of music, showing styles representative of the proposed programme
  • Résumé
  • 2 letters of recommendation from professional musicians (preferably including a current or recent organ teacher)
  • Specimen recital programmes from recent or upcoming organ recitals

Applicants are encouraged to propose concert programmes (and to record works for the CD) that allow them to display their interpretative strengths: it is not necessary to show a broad range of styles and periods unless that is your preference. Applicants with experience in concert improvisation are encouraged to feature this art in their proposal. The selection panel will be concerned with choosing proposals that enhance the overall programming integrity of the Festival.

Deadline for Applications
