The Calgary Youth Orchestra
The Calgary Youth Orchestra (CYO) is the flagship orchestra in Mount Royal Conservatory's Orchestral Program. Internationally recognized as one of Canada's leading youth orchestras, the CYO provides solid training in orchestral playing with professional coaching from some of the best local, national and international clinicians and conductors. Workshops with guest conductors and visiting orchestras are a regular program feature.
The CYO performs a series of concerts throughout the year and participates in the annual Alberta Youth Orchestra Symposium with the Edmonton Youth Orchestra in Banff. Since 1970 the orchestra has toured internationally, and continues to do so, usually every second.
Acceptance into the orchestra is by competitive audition in May each year, and is open to students aged 14 to 24.
The CYO is supported by the Calgary Youth Orchestra Society, an independent not-for-profit society which works to provide enhanced performance opportunities for the orchestra. All CYO student members and their parents or guardians automatically become members of the Society.

About CYO Fees:
The Mount Royal Conservatory registration fee ($495.00) contributes to the Conservatory's cost for conductors, music library, music purchases, theatre services, secretarial support services, and many aspects of administration. Payment is due when you register for Calgary Youth Orchestra at the Conservatory office by August 31, 2014. In cases of financial hardship, students are encouraged to apply for Conservatory Special Scholarships, which may cover all or part of the Conservatory fee. Additionally, please check with the Conservatory for payment options.
The Calgary Youth Orchestra fee ($500.00) helps to pay for clinicians, the part-time Orchestra Manager, subsidizes the Alberta Youth Orchestra Symposium at the Banff Centre, music rental, concert hall rentals, and advertising and promotion.
The following cheques should be made payable to the Calgary Youth Orchestra:
- $500.00 CYO fees
- $75.00 music deposit (post-dated June 30, 2015)
Parents may choose to pay the CYO fee by credit card (Visa and Mastercard only) by contacting the Conservatory office (403.440.6821). Alternatively, post-dated cheques may be presented to the Orchestra Manager at the September meeting which represents payment over the period from September to December, with the final payment due on December 15.
Please note that the music deposit cheque will be returned to you or shredded (your choice) after all music and folders are returned in good condition at the end of the season.
Members of the CYO for whom payment of the CYO fee is a financial burden should apply in writing, no later than Sept. 30, 2014 to the CYO Society President, c/o George Fenwick, Orchestra Manager, for consideration of a reduction or waiver of fees.
