Morningside Music Bridge
A camera crew from China Central Television (CCTV) – the national television station of the People’s Republic of China – will be on campus daily at Mount Royal University until July 31, creating a documentary on the Mount Royal Conservatory’s Morningside Music Bridge program. Stay tuned for details!
The first Morningside Music Bridge (MMB) was held in Calgary in 1997. The program’s catalysts were Conservatory Director Paul Dornian and Andy Chan, a member of the Morningside Group, an international investment company based in China. The pair planned to expose Canadian and Chinese students to exceptional teachers, as well as facilitate a broad cultural exchange. Through this exchange the Morningside Music Bridge would offer these students, aged 12 – 18, a unique opportunity to expand their artistic and cultural horizons. The program was originally planned to be held exclusively in North America, but has since ran in Shanghai, China (2006) and Gdansk, Poland (2009).
Every year since 1997, MMB has continued to host gifted young musicians from some of the world's leading music schools. Students engage in a month-long round of private lessons, masterclasses and chamber music recitals on four instrument specialties: piano, violin, viola and cello. Morningside Music Bridge participants are selected for the program based on technical and artistic merit.
In addition to its two original focus countries, Canada and China, the Morningside Music Bridge now attracts students from Japan, Taiwan, The Netherland, Russia, Poland, New Zealand and the United States.
The 14th Morningside Music Bridge international training program will be held July 2 - 30, 2010.
