Focusing on improvisation and performance skills, this intensive workshop is designed to enhance the understanding and appreciation of jazz styles, practices and history. The workshop is geared for students of piano, bass, guitar, voice, drums, trombone, trumpet and saxophone aged 13 and older. Admission preference is given to students in a school band program.
The course content provides novice students with an introduction to the essence of jazz, namely improvisation and performance. Those already acquainted with jazz will benefit from the week's immersion in improvisation, rehearsal and performance. Students who have ensemble experience in jazz bands are encouraged to participate.

Daily Activities
Tools of Jazz Improvisation
Participants will explore jazz theory by listening to recordings of jazz masters and applying their techniques, scale exercises and chord constructions. Students will then learn how to analyze and apply these techniques in performing jazz.
Repertoire
Jazz standards are chosen to offer a challenge to students at all levels of skill and experience.
Combo/Improvisation
Participants will discover how to interpret lead sheets through ensemble work as combos, rhythm and horn sections, during jam sessions, rehearsals and performances.
