FAQ

FAQ

1. Why consider an eLearning course?

It's about flexibility and convenience for you. If you need to arrange your course work around other important life and work commitments, eLearning may be the answer. Because the materials are available to you at any time, you can work on your course at times and days of the week that work best for you. Keep in mind that you still need to meet course deadlines and due dates.

2. Is eLearning right for me?

eLearning may be right for you if you're an independent learner and don't need someone to remind you about deadlines. If you are comfortable with reading online, have a willingness to learn new technology and have good time management skills, eLearning is likely a fit for you. You will spend just as much time to complete an eLearning course as you will for a face-to-face course.

3. Is an eLearning course of the same quality as a face-to-face course?

You get the same high quality Mount Royal Experience in every delivery format. eLearning courses have the same learning outcomes and standards as their face-to-face counterparts. You will access equivalent content and you will do similar assignments as your face-to-face peers.

4. Is an eLearning course easier and less work?

Reduced time in the physical classroom doesn't mean that there is less course work. Online and blended courses let you complete the work at more convenient times. They have the same rigour, high expectations and standards as face-to-face courses. You should expect to spend at least 10 to 15 hours per week on your course.

5. Do I still get to interact with my professor and peers?

There are many ways you may interact with your professor and peers. Your professor might use announcements, discussion boards, virtual meetings, and/or emails to contact you or the whole class. Virtual office hours may be available to you (by phone or web conference) for individual consultations with your professor.

There are also many ways you might communicate and work with your classmates including group activities, discussion boards, online conferences, and online presentations.

6. Do I need to be tech savvy?

You don't need to be a computer expert to take an online course. However, you do need basic computer skills such as word processing, sending and accessing email, and how to use a web browser to navigate online. The most important thing you need is a willingness to learn new technology.

7. What are the technical requirements?

You need a computer or laptop with a high speed internet connection to take eLearning courses at Mount Royal-some required course materials may not be available via smartphones and tablets.

Courses are often accessed through Blackboard, which is Mount Royal's learning management system.

Check that your computer has the minimum technical requirements and supported browser for running Blackboard at https://help.blackboard.com/Learn/Student/Getting_Started/Browser_Support/Browser_Checker

Your course or program may have additional technical requirements, such as specialized software. If you are unsure if a course has additional technical requirements, contact the department by visiting the directory at https://www.mtroyal.ca/ContactUs/contact_academics.htm.
