Survey reveals University Advancement is more appropriate
Marketing initiatives, alumni engagement, media relations, communicating changes on campus, archival cataloguing and fund raising are a few of the responsibilities that fall under the umbrella of External Relations. Together, these efforts help move our institution forward in the eyes of the campus and wider communites.

In recognition of this role and in light of Mount Royal’s name change from College to University, Hunter Wight, vice president external relations, has recommended a name change for the division from, Office of External Relations to Office of University Advancement.

“University Advancement better reflects the versatility and objectives of our division,” says Wight. “Particularly now with the direction we are taking as a university and member of AUCC.”

The Office of University Advancement includes the institution’s Marketing, Communications, Archives, Alumni Relations and The Foundation.

Wight surveyed the websites of 56 AUCC members in order to determine what the standard is among our contemporaries. The results revealed that 54% (30 of the 56 universities) use Advancement in whole or in part when describing similar departments.

“University Advancement directly reinforces the university name when dealing with stakeholders, funders, government, media, colleagues and the public,” says Wight. “It will also provide a more accurate profile of the role and purpose of the division internally.”

“Adopting University Advancement reflects the increasingly strategic emphasis of this area of activity,” says Wight. “It is a divisional name that states clearly why our work is done rather than just what is done.”
