Marshall kicks off new campaign with $10,000 contribution
Getting involved Mount Royal University's newest campaign is another way to show you believe in what you do.

The Foundation's internal campaign launch was well attended earlier this week.

Mount Royal University is about community and it’s about creating the best possible environment for our students.

On March 2, President Dave Marshall and The Foundation invited faculty and staff to be the first to hear about Mount Royal's new Changing the Face of Education campaign.

The event served as the campaign’s internal launch. A high profile, external launch will take place once the campaign has raised a significant portion of its goal.

The campus-wide event had a great turnout, as employees were given the chance to learn all about the $105-million fund raising campaign.

Marshall, who spoke at the event, summarized the three priorities of the campaign: “learning opportunities, the learning environment and learning spaces.”

He explained how funding for these three areas will help Mount Royal move closer to becoming Canada’s premier undergraduate university based on measures related to student success and satisfaction.

He said it will give the campaign a lot of credibility,“if our fund raisers can go out into the community and say we’ve already raised a certain amount of money internally, with contributions coming from the president on down.”

The funds raised by this new campaign will be put towards key projects like the new library as well as further scholarship and bursaries for students.

To back that up Dave announced that he and his wife Sheila are making a $10,000 contribution to get the ball rolling and will further contribute an extra $500 for every percentage point raised above the 70 % participation mark from staff and faculty.

While the campaign will shortly be launched to the public, employee engagement and participation are essential to its success, as emphasized by the ambassadors of the Campus Community Campaign who spoke at the event. The peer-to-peer ambassadors are:

Brian Fleming, executive director of Student Affairs and Campus Life

Indy Lagu, chair, Mathematics, Physics and Engineering

Alice Swabey, coordinator, circulation & reserves / instructional services librarian

Marnie Powell, marketing coordinator in the Office of University Advancement

Lagu, who has been at Mount Royal for more than 14 years, has been contributing to student scholarships in his department for the past five years.

“Whether someone can give $4 or $40, it really isn’t about the amount that one gives.

"The simple act of giving itself is what has the greatest impact. It’s something people can take pride in and feel good about.”

Lagu says he feels fortunate to work at Mount Royal, and looks at his donations as a small way of saying thank you, while helping the students.
"I've lived a charmed life. When I went to university, my dad was a professor, so I didn't have to pay tuition.

“I didn't really realize the significant time and energy that students had to dedicate to part-time jobs in order to make enough money to cover their tuition. I feel honoured that I can make a small contribution to help Mount Royal's students fund their education."

“While individual donations from Mount Royal employees are not likely going to get the library built, or fund a student's education, if we all contribute a small gift, it will eventually amount to an enormous contribution."
