MRU: A year in review
The year 2009 was certainly a memorable one for Mount Royal, which of course we can now proudly call Mount Royal University. While Sept. 3 was historic — we have the T-shirts to prove it — it wasn’t the only day worth remembering.
So many great things have happened over the past 12 months that we could only highlight some. Enjoy your trip down memory lane.

The annual Canadian University Survey Consortium (CUSC) survey results show students hold a high level of regard for Mount Royal

More than 100 employees and students gathered in front of a small TV on Main Street to watch U.S. President Barack Obama’s inauguration
Ten faculty members were chosen as 2009 Teaching and Learning Scholars

Minister of Advanced Education and Technology, Doug Horner, proposed amendments to the Post-Secondary Learning Act that would allow Mount Royal to apply to use “university” in our name
To celebrate the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin, Jay Ingram, the host Discovery Channel’s Daily Planet, came to Mount Royal and gave the talk Darwin, Natural Selection and SEX: 150 Years of Getting It On.
Theatre MRC (now MRU) presented You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown
Mount Royal held its first Majors/Minors Fair — which helps students decide on their majors
The Library added a chat feature to its website

Native Awareness Month included many great activities including a lecture series hosted by the Iniskim Centre
Theatre MR C (now MRU) presented The Gift of the Coat
The Alberta Weekly Newspaper Association (AWNA) ranked Mount Royal's student newspaper, the Calgary Journal, as the best campus newspaper in the province. Journalism student Joe Burima also won for best overall feature story in the Campus Division category at the AWNA awards
Mount Royal received a Canadian Forces Liaison Council's National Employer Support Award

Students interacted with people who’ve worked in high levels of government at the Strategic Market Expansion in the NAFTA Nations symposium
Four stained glass windows that have a 50-year history at Mount Royal are hung in the staircase of the East Arts building
Cougars men's basketball team won the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association National Championship — first time in 30 years
Cougars men's and women's hockey teams narrowly missed out on provincial gold medals, losing in Game 5 of each series. Both teams earned silver medals

Women's Soccer coach Ian Fuge retired after 14 seasons behind the Cougars bench with an impressive 121-7-13 mark in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference regular season play
Wyatt Artist in Residence Concert Series — Ian Swensen
The winner of Mount Royal’s centennial logo design contest is named — Gustavo Del Castillo, an international student
Dave Marshall and professor Roger Saint-Fort talked to Face Time about their trip to Cameroon, Africa. The humanitarian trip included Marshall’s work with ICA Canada and Saint-Fort putting his research into action and providing accessible and affordable clean drinking water to villages
Mount Royal hosted Degree Information Night, which highlights our different degrees for prospective students
The Board of Governors approved Mount Royal’s campus expansion masterplan
Mount Royal began implementing strategies for dealing with the H1N1 influenza

The annual Employee Awards honoured Mount Royal staff, faculty and retirees
The 25th annual Holocaust Education Symposium was held. It enabled students to learn about the Holocaust by talking with Holocaust survivors
The Canadian Society for the Study of Higher Education named an article by Dave Marshall as the best scholarly paper to be published in its flagship journal during 2008
Mount Royal’s Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) team placed fourth at the national SIFE competition in Toronto

Youngsters filled the campus as part of College Kids

Mount Royal University joined forces with the University of Calgary, SAIT and the Alberta College of Art and Design to enter the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon. Their solar home — SolAbode — was built in Calgary and shipped to Washington, D.C., for the international competition. The first all-western Canadian team finished sixth overall
The Faculty of Science and Technology showed off its new scanning electron microscope
