As a familiar face to the MRU community, Jones has been working as vice-president external of the Students’ Association with President Travis McIntosh for the past year.
During that term, Jones learned a lot about how the school is run, what works for the students and what could be done better. He is looking forward to drawing on that cache of experience and knowledge as he steps into a larger role with more responsibilities.
“Working as VP External of SAMRU, my focus was on the smaller projects that went into the big picture,” says Jones.
“As president, I look forward to being able to bring the smaller roles back into the big picture.”
Jones is finding his new job a bit of an adjustment in comparison to his former post. As president-elect, he’s already dealing with governance policies, connecting with key stakeholders and developing partnerships with the help of McIntosh.
He’s absorbing as much as he can though and enjoying the new challenges.
“I am really excited to learn from the great things Travis McIntosh has done as a team leader,” says Jones. “My goal is to continue to build on what he has done for SAMRU.”
One of Jones’ main objectives is to raise awareness and participation within the Students’ Association. Recognizing that although students are the main SAMRU audience, faculty and staff outreach will also be a part of Jones’ new agenda.
“I am hoping to create and maintain a great relationship between faculty, staff and the Students’ Association,” says Jones. “We are all on the same team working to engage students.”
Part of the reason behind Jones’ decision to run for president was student engagement. He feels it is his way of giving back to the MRU community.
“Mount Royal gave me so much through education,” says Jones. “I am ready to put the theory I have learned in the classroom into reality and ultimately use that to be there for MRU students.”
A dedicated and approachable president, Jones gets some of his approach learning from and observing Mount Royal President Dave Marshall.
“President Marshall is a great leader and I keep learning so much from what he does for the University,” says Jones.
“He is extremely dedicated and has kept his promises to MRU students.”
“I hope everyone would consider taking on a position like this,” says Jones. “It is a tremendous way to serve your community and create excitement throughout Mount Royal about what the SAMRU does.”
Megan Melnyk: Vice-President External

Melnyk is taking on the role of vice-president external within the SAMRU and is thrilled to be working with Robert Jones, Anna Piltingsrud and Eily Sweeney.
The team will hit the ground running as they were members of last year’s council as well. Melnyk believes that familiarity and chemistry will give them an advantage heading towards the 2010-2011 school year.
“There are so many issues affecting students, so there will be a lot for me to work on,” says Melnyk. “As VP external, my job is to work with the external stakeholders and decision makers to cultivate strong relationships.”
Anna Piltingsrud: Vice-President Academic

Piltingsrud is excited about the taking on the role of vice president academic of the SAMRU, and the opportunity to elicit positive change in her peers’ lives.
Ready to make a difference, Piltingsrud is taking the position head-on.
“I am especially excited about the difference I can make in student’s lives through initiatives such as the Textbook Loan Program.”
Eily Sweeney: Vice-President Student Life

Going into her second term of office as the vice-president student life, Sweeney plans to continue focusing and promoting initiatives to advance campus sustainability.
“I am thrilled to have been given the opportunity to represent and advocate on behalf of Mount Royal Students for another year,” says Sweeney.
An executive committee bringing different knowledge, experiences and enthusiasm into office to enhance the MRU community — SAMRU has an exciting new year ahead.
