March 9, 2015Mount Royal University aviation program reaches new heights after receiving world-class accreditation
CALGARY — Mount Royal University is celebrating the success of its aviation program after it was approved by one of the world’s leading aviation accreditation agencies.
The Aviation Accreditation Board International (AABI) has granted Mount Royal accreditation, starting in March 2015.
While he was confident that Mount Royal was already operating one of North America’s premier flight training programs, associate professor Leon Cygman, PhD, says it’s another sign that the program is producing extremely competent graduates.
“We’ve received the gold seal of accreditation when it comes to aviation education,” said Cygman, acting Chair of the Aviation, General Management, Human Resources department.
“This is further recognition that our program meets stringent industry standards of quality, and it’s also a strong indication that we’re providing a relevant educational experience to our students.”
The timing could not be better for prospective pilots, with the 2015 Aviation Career Expo set to take place at the Bissett School of Business on March 14.
“For students applying to work for the major airlines, this accreditation is something that will move their resumes to the top of the pile,” said Cygman. “It differentiates our students from almost every program in the rest of Canada.”
In receiving the approval, Mount Royal becomes only the second aviation program to attain AABI certification outside of the United States.
Media are invited to test out Mount Royal’s state-of-the-art ALSIM ALX Flight Training simulator as part of their coverage of the accreditation. The simulator includes high-resolution visuals on a three-metre-high, 208-degree wraparound screen. Users can experience takeoff and landing at any airport in the world.
