Coursework sparks change
General science student adjusts career path to pursue a passion
Brooklynne Pearson says that many of the professors at Mount Royal are “amazing.”
Bachelor of Science — General Science student Brooklynne Pearson loves a good plan. The roadmap she sketched out to pursue her dream career as a high-school teacher was put into motion after being accepted to Mount Royal University.
She had heard from both alumni and students that MRU has caring professors and smaller class sizes, but ultimately it was the general science major that “fit.”
“I was very sure of my career plan before enrolling at Mount Royal and the general science program best fit my plan,” Pearson says.
For some, the four-year Bachelor of Science — General Science degree will be a stepping stone to becoming a secondary school teacher, while for others it might lead to a career in another science-related field.
What makes the career options plentiful is the choice of concentrations available to students, including: biology, chemistry, geography, geology, mathematics and physics. This mix offers students a unique opportunity to customize their degree to broaden job prospects or go on to graduate school.
“The general science program has allowed me to have a well-rounded education and I appreciate that I am able to select courses based on my interests.”
Pearson opted to concentrate on chemistry and biology, and found that her career aspirations were evolving as she progressed through the curriculum.

She credits her Principles of Ecology and Evolution professor for igniting a new passion in ecological and environmental research. “I have had the chance to take a few different classes and that prompted me to change my plans for the future.”
A self-described life-long learner, Pearson says that many of the professors at Mount Royal are “amazing.”
“They know their content, and they know how to make the classes interesting and engage students.”
She now intends to take it up a notch and become a university professor, as she “truly loves to teach,” and with a broad science education she’s starting on the right foot.
The general science program establishes a foundation in science, mathematics and technology. Students receive hands-on laboratory experience and the opportunity to participate in innovative research. Graduates of the program are job-ready for a wide variety of careers and also well prepared for further education.
